Prayer for Conveying the Coffin to the Burial Site

When transporting the coffin from the funeral home to the burial site

Meaning

The conveying-of-the-coffin rite is the final farewell as a loved one leaves the home where they once lived. The prayer allows the living to express affection and to ask that the departed find a peaceful rest.

Offering preparation

The funeral procession, incense, candles, white flowers. A bowl of rice and a boiled egg placed atop the coffin per custom. Mourning headbands for all.

Namo Amitābha Buddha! (3 times) We respectfully bow to the spirit of: .......................................... Today is the .......... day of the .......... month, year .......... The descendants and kin sincerely report: The auspicious hour has now come; we ask permission to convey the coffin of .......... to its final resting place at .......................................... We respectfully bow to the spirit; please go to your peaceful rest. The descendants will always remember and make offerings on time. We respectfully ask the Buddhas to bless the spirit's liberation. Namo Amitābha Buddha! (3 times)
