Cúng Mụ Rite (Đầy Cữ, Đầy Tháng, Thôi Nôi)

7–9 days after birth (đầy cữ); 1 month (đầy tháng); 1 year (thôi nôi — first birthday)

Meaning

Giving thanks to the Bà Mụ (Midwife Goddesses) and the Heavenly Maidens who shaped the child's form and protected mother and child, asking shelter so the child may grow strong, healthy, eat well, grow fast, and enjoy lifetimes of glory.

Offering preparation

- Gấc-fruit sticky rice: 7 portions (boy), 9 portions (girl)
- Sea crab: 7 (boy), 9 (girl)
- Red-dyed chicken eggs: 7 (boy), 9 (girl)
- Fresh flowers, fruit, gold paper money, betel and areca.

(3 times) I respectfully bow to: THE FIRST HEAVENLY ELDER SISTER, GREAT IMMORTAL THE SECOND HEAVENLY EMPEROR, GREAT IMMORTAL THE THIRD MIDWIFE GODDESS, GREAT IMMORTAL THE TWELVE DIVISIONS OF HEAVENLY MAIDENS THE THIRTY-SIX PALACES OF HEAVENLY MAIDENS Today is the ...... day of the ...... month, year ....... The husband and wife: ....... Have been blessed with a (son, daughter) named ...... Now on this đầy cữ (or đầy tháng, đầy năm) day, with sincere heart we prepare incense, flowers, and offerings, laid out before the altar, and respectfully report to the venerable Deities: Thanks to the kindness of the Buddhas of the Ten Directions, the Sages and Holy Ones, the Lord-Midwife Goddesses, the Spirit Deities, the Earth Deity of the soil-vein, the principal Earth Deity, and the ancestors of both paternal and maternal sides, our child ...... was born on ....... and mother and child are well. We humbly ask: the Heavenly Maidens, the venerable Deities, descend before the altar, bear witness to our sincerity, partake of these offerings, shelter and support, caress and protect this child — that the child eat well, sleep well, eat well and grow fast, free of illness, free of misfortune, free of calamity, free of evil, free of bound; that the child's body and destiny be at peace, strong; that lifetime after lifetime they enjoy glory and wealth. May our family enjoy blessing, longevity, and ease; may good seeds sprout and ill karma be dispelled; may the four seasons hold no misfortune to worry over.
