Prayer to the Earth Deity (Thổ Công, Thổ Địa)

Offering to the Earth Deity at home, possibly on the 1st, full moon, or for major events

Meaning

Thổ Công (also called Thổ Địa or Ông Địa) is the deity overseeing the plot of land on which a family lives. By folk belief, Thổ Công protects the family from evil and blesses livelihoods. Offering to Thổ Công expresses respect for the local deity.

Offering preparation

Incense, candles, fruit, betel and areca, wine, water. Set on the Thổ Địa altar (usually placed in a corner of the home, near the kitchen, or on the ground).

We sincerely present offerings of incense and flowers, respectfully laid before the altar. We respectfully report: Our family lives on this plot of land, sheltered and overseen by You. We respectfully ask that You continue to bless us: That the land remain peaceful and free of misfortune. That the family be safe and our livelihood prosper. That all enjoy good health and peace. We offer modest gifts with sincere hearts; we respectfully present them. Namo Amitābha Buddha! (3 times)
